1927 BURSARY OPPORTUNITY

We are offering 5 small Bursaries of £1,500 to 5 Kent-based Artists making contemporary performance!

Hello

We’re 1927.

We use animation, live music and theatre to tell stories…often funny, dark, political and odd, sometimes spectacular, sometimes simple. We have been creating and touring original shows since 2008 when our first show, Between the devil and the deep blue sea, took us all over the world, wowing and sometimes baffling audiences!

For the first few years we made work with minimal if any funding and limited time. We are indebted to the people who helped us out early on.

We know from practice that carving even a few days out to work in a studio (or in 2020 at home, in parks and on beaches!) to explore new performance ideas can be tricky.

  • How do you pay yourself?

  • How do you make space?

  • How do you pay for the space?

  • How do you pay your collaborators?

  • How to you find someone to be an outside eye, or shape a producing plan?

We don’t suggest we have the answers. But we know that crafting original performance, is a jigsaw puzzle of time, space, resource, support…. and most importantly, good ideas!

So, as a homage to our early days and the people who helped us out, we are, for a second year, offering 5 small Bursaries to help you develop a piece of original, sublime, heart wrenching, political, or just plain weird performance.

This year has been a challenge and we’ve all had to adapt.  Working at kitchen tables, in sheds and corners of our homes we’ve been carving time and space to maintain creative purpose and continue crafting, collaborating and experimenting with different ways of telling stories.  For our 2021 Bursaries we want to support our neighbouring creatives to do this, and so this years call out is specifically for Kent-based Artists making contemporary performance.  We don't know when performance spaces will fully reopen - but when they do and over the coming years new work, new stories, new art WILL be needed more than ever.

Alongside the cash bursary, 1927 will offer up to 4 Mentoring sessions.

How to apply

  • Please send us up to one page or a maximum 5 minute video or audio recording about your practice and/or the piece you are developing or looking to develop.

  • Tell us why a 1927 Bursary would be useful for you.

  • Tell us, briefly, what the money would be used for.

  • Tell us who you think it might be for…what kind of audience might like this?! Or hate this?! The best work is rarely for everyone!

  • Tell us where in Kent you are based.

Top tips!

  • The Bursary will be given to artists who have made work previously. It does not have to have been successful work! But proof of having created something previously is essential.

  • We are looking to support work that is original. Or political. Or experimental!

  • We are looking for performance makers who are developing a distinctive voice.

  • Your work may be more film than theatre! A live album! A classic piece of storytelling! A hybrid fusion! A collaboration or a solo piece of work.

  • We’re looking to support people who are playing with form or have a brilliant story to tell.

  • You do not have to be a ‘full time artist’. Or have any training. You could make this Bursary work in amongst your job, care duties, and other commitments.

  • Please keep applications short and sweet. Do send links to work if appropriate.

Deadline

All applications must be received by 5pm on Monday 11 January 2021.

Virtual Interviews will be held w/c 18 January 2021.

The Bursary supported activity should ideally take place between February – July 2021.

Applications should be submitted by email to 1927bursaries@gmail.com.

Equal Opportunities

1927 is committed to promoting Equality, Diversity & inclusivity across all our activities.  We are interested in collaborating with and supporting artists, empowering participants and reaching audiences who are underrepresented in the arts due to socio-economic factors, ethnicity, race and disability and we positively welcome applications for participation from these groups.

To help us pursue this commitment we need to understand who we are reaching and who we are not. We’d appreciate your help with this - by takings 3 minutes to complete the form below.  It’s not a tick box data collection exercise, but your opportunity to tell us what you want about how you self-define. Completion is voluntary and not doing so will in no way prejudice your application.  Information you supply will be treated in confidence and detached from your bursary application
